Fortyfour is an 1870s house, positioned between two garages in Islington, purchased in 2020 and extended to create a second bedroom while preserving much of its original character. Designed in collaboration with fardaa architects, the renovation kept the distinctive blue façade and structural elements like the ground slab and joists. Slim-framed windows were added to the original arched openings, and the exterior was refreshed with a lighter shade of blue inspired by Wedgewood Jasperware. Inside, every inch of space was utilised through custom-built joinery, providing storage and comfort.
On the ground floor, the design creates a minimal yet textured feel, with built-in shelving, seating, and kitchen elements that connect seamlessly with the outdoor terrace. Large windows fold away entirely, transforming the dining area into a semi-outdoor space ideal for afternoon and evening use. Upstairs, two bedrooms and a bathroom are filled with natural light from skylights, while cork flooring and lime-rendered walls provide warmth, sound absorption, and a textured aesthetic.
Sustainability was a major focus throughout the project. The house was retrofitted with reclaimed bricks, cork insulation, and lime mortar to reduce its environmental impact. An electric boiler replaced the old gas system, while double-glazed windows enhanced energy efficiency. By updating this compact, characterful home, we have shown how thoughtful design can blend modern sustainability with historic charm.
